Sprouts!!!

Our class devoured a half-kilo of sprouts in under 30 minutes—most without any salad dressing! The students loved the fresh flavors so much that I couldn’t keep up, constantly refilling Dixie cups that were empty before I could snap a photo. Next time, we’ll be using plates!

We grew two types of sprouts: speckled pea and buckwheat. We learned that misting buckwheat daily helps the seed coats fall off more easily, but we managed just fine. After a vote, the class decided that speckled pea sprouts are a better option for home, as they grow faster and the seeds are more affordable. As for the fava beans? Those were a no-go. Our seeds might have been too old, or maybe they just didn’t appreciate the lack of weekend supervision (they need daily rinsing).

So, what’s on our plate next? More peas! We started a new tray yesterday, and if we get enough sprouts, we’ll share them with our Little Buddy class in Grade 1/2.
