Hands-On Learning: Alchemists and Acids

The best way to think like a scientist is to test like one! With guidance from our teacher candidate, Ms. Lamothe, students explored the power of observation and learned how to control variables in a lab. We began with a bit of history, learning about alchemists, then dove into a fun experiment to test for acids.

Students used a flowchart to guide their tests, experimenting with baking soda, baking powder, and a “mystery liquid” (purple cabbage water) that changes color in the presence of an acid. They discovered that cabbage water turns bright pink when mixed with an acid—although it’s harder to see with thick, colorful substances like mustard! They also found that baking powder reacts in water, making it unreliable as an acid test. We captured some great photos of our budding scientists to share at the year-end assembly. Thank you, Ms. Lamothe, for such a fantastic hands-on activity!
