Green Through the Holidays: Our Hydroponic Garden's Winter Prep

Tumbler Tomato Roots that need a good haircut!

As we approach the Christmas holidays, our classroom hydroponic tower is getting some special attention. Our Tumbler and Tiny Tim tomato plants have been growing strong for four months, and we're excited to see tiny tomatoes already forming!

Preparing our garden for the holiday break was a bit like tucking our plants in for a long winter's nap. We carefully trimmed the plant roots that had grown quite enthusiastic - they were starting to weave through the individual plant pots' screen filters, almost like curious explorers searching for more space. Pruning helps keep the plants healthy and prevents them from getting too tangled.

Our basil is looking lush, and the tomato plants are showing off their first tiny fruits. We've adjusted the water flow, reducing it by about a third to help the plants conserve energy during the quieter holiday weeks. Our amazing custodian, Ms. F, will keep an eye on the water levels and top up the reservoir as needed.

It's been incredible to watch these plants grow from seeds to mini-gardens right here in our classroom. When we return in the new year, we're hoping for a bountiful harvest of fresh tomatoes and fragrant basil!
