Estimating and Calculating Decimal Amounts and Integers!

Grade 6 students are working on the skills of multiplying decimal amounts, using front-end estimation. Front-end estimation means using the farthest left number (the number at the front) and rounding it to its place value, leaving all the other numbers as 0's. 3 x 8.23 is rounded to 3 x 8, and 4 x 24.64 is rounded to 4 x 25. Today, students first estimated the product of two sets of numbers, and then calculated the amount exactly by using money. Sample questioned included 6 x $2.34, 4 x $3.25

Helping at home can be easy. Most of us carry a calculator in our pocket (aka "our phones") but estimating amounts, especially when it comes to decimal amounts is a key skill. Have students add up the cost of the groceries as you put them in your cart. Or, if you are buying multiple of an item, help them estimate the cost using multiplication.

Today Grade 7's worked on deciding when to use adding or subtracting integers in real world equations. So far they have learned to multiply and divide integers using rules for positive and negative answers, as well as how to add and subtract using integer chips and number lines. Sample questions today included "One January day in Calgary, a chinook raised the the temperature from -17 degree Celsius, to +13 degrees Celsius. What was the change in temperature?" On Monday, students will begin their chapter review, and will be practicing for their test.

Student are also practicing their basic multiplication skills from 2-9, so if you have a chance, please help students by quizzing them at home. Multiplication charts are inside every student planner to help with this task. Thank you for all of your support!
