This month, our class took on a special project that combined our learning about the economy with a real-world opportunity to make a difference. As part of our social studies unit, we’ve been using play money and running our own classroom businesses to understand how economies work. But we also wanted to explore the important role that non-profit organizations play in supporting people both locally and globally.

After reading No Ordinary Day by Deborah Ellis—a powerful book about a child living in poverty—we decided to take action. Our class came together and raised $116.00 through generous donations from parents and students. This money was donated to a Canadian non-profit organization called EffectHope.org, which works to improve health and education for people in need. With the funds we raised, we were able to cover a full year of school for a student, including tuition, school supplies, and a uniform.

This experience was a meaningful way to connect our classroom learning with real-world impact. It helped us understand how economies function, not just in terms of earning and spending, but also in how people and organizations can come together to help others. Our students saw firsthand how small efforts can lead to big changes!

Thank you to all the families who contributed! Your support helped our students see the power of generosity and the importance of education for all children. We’re so proud of this achievement and look forward to more ways we can learn and give back in the future!
