Counting Back Money: A lost skill revived!

I do not know how many times a person in the service industry has just handed me my change as a tumbling pile of bills and coins. Yes, debit is still everyone's go to, but the art of counting back change or at least telling the customer your change is "Eight dollars and fifty-five cents" is a memory of my past.

In our economy unit students each day take a Chance card and either add a debit or a credit to their weekly income. We are allowed to go into debt, but by the end of the month there will be interest charged on any withdrawals. We operate on a 10% of real world costs, although I have to admit, sometimes I just have to get a little bit of positive behaviour money out there as students can be awfully broke at times!

With this unit, comes the revival of counting back change and deciding on how to make a $200 cash register float as a team. How many $50's should you have? How many $5's? Does this change depending on the nature of your business and sales? We will continue to work on this skill all week, and it adds to strengthening everyone's basic numeracy skills.
