Wow! Wow! Wow! Our class had a goal of raising $25 towards Leprosy as part of our Rights of Children unit, and we raised $200!
Our students began reading the book No Ordinary Day by Deborah Ellis as part of a Social Studies and Language Arts Rights of Children unit plan I developed. When we realized that sales of the book would be donated to the Leprosy Mission, students thought that perhaps we could each just bring a dollar, to show our support. As we continued reading, students were so engaged that we ended up talking more and more about ways we could take action. I am a National Geographic Certified teacher, so using the Nat Geo Learning Framework, we decided that we needed to take action at a local AND a global level. Our school was already bringing in donations for the local food bank, so we decided to step up locally and globally. As we read, students became more connected with the character Valli, and our $25 dollar goal reached $200 from class donations by day three. The students then broke in to groups and had to decide how their group would spend a portion of the money. We then came together as a class and negotiated which supplies we should purchase as a donation. As always, kids step up to the plate when their critical thinking is engaged, and their level of empathy for people from all nations, warms my soul.
Here is what we bought:
3 x Antibiotics ($60)
1 x Foot Washing Kit ($10)
1 x Equal Health Care For Girls ($25)
1x Wound Care Supplies ($25)
1 x Protective Sandals($25)
1 x Educational Success($45)
1 x Cane ($10)
